'Atmospheric Road', 'Misery Hill'. Explaining some of Dublin's strangest street names

Have you ever been walking down a street in Dublin and had to take a double check when you see the street name?

There's a few hidden gems in the capital, from the comical to the downright bizzare.

Here, we explain how some of these unusual names came about.

Atmospheric Road, Dalkey

Atmospheric Road (Google maps)

Back in the day, this was the site of the Atmospheric Railway in Dalkey, the first of its type in the world.

It operated for eleven years, between 1843 and 1854.

Nowadays, a section of the path is part of the DART route. The bridge that was there at the time of the first railway is still there today.

Little Britain Street, Dublin 7

Little Britain Street (Google Maps)

This peculiar street dates as far back as the 1911 census, when 250 people were registered as living on the then-dilapidated street, according to Dublin City Council.

It is located just off Parnell Street, a few minutes walk from Cineworld.

Misery Hill, Grand Canal Dock

Don't come here if you're looking for a laugh!

You may be wondering why the headquarters of feel-good musicals is located across from such a disheartening road, well truth is, we all are.

Historian Turtle Bunbury has said that it got its name from: "an age when the corpses of those executed at Gallows Hill near Upper Baggot Street were carted here and strung up to rot as a warning to other would be troublemakers."

Lovely stuff.

This peculiar block in Kilmore

Eagle Park, Apollo Way, Armstrong Walk, and Aldrin Walk (Google maps)

No prizes for guessing what these four roads are named after. Eagle Park, Apollo Way, Armstrong Walk, and Aldrin Walk make up four of five the five rows of roads in this block in Kilmore.

It is fair to say they are named after the US's successful moon landing in 1969.

Despite his many achievements, including being the first man on the moon, we think Armstrong would be chuffed with this tribute more than any other.

Lucky Lane, Dublin 7

Lucky Lane (Google Maps)

Dublin 7 is no stranger to funky street names, and this is another one to add to the list.

It was named by architect Pete Carroll, who told independent.ie in 2015 that he got the name after hearing stories from some locals.

Maybe it's worth picking up a lottery ticket nearby next time you're passing!
