Atletico Madrid without £113m man Joao Felix for Liverpool Champions League clash

Atletico Madrid's record-signing Joao Felix has been ruled out of their Champions League last-16 tie against Liverpool.

The £113million summer signing, who has not played in over three weeks after suffering a muscle injury, was hopeful of being fit for the visit of the reigning European champions.

Yet, Goal reported that the forward has been struck with illness, after catching the virus 'pharyngotonsillitis', which has consequently sidelined the 20-year-old.

The young Portuguese star trained by himself in the gym during his team's penultimate training session before the visit of the Reds on Tuesday evening.

Former Spurs full-back Kieran Trippier is also unavailable, while ex-Chelsea striker Diego Costa is set to make his first appearance since November after the Spaniard suffered a back injury.

On the other hand, Liverpool come into the fixture with a fully fit squad, albeit for the injured Xherdan Shaqiri - leaving Klopp with somewhat of a selection headache after a number of good performances from all the players involved.

Jurgen Klopp's side arrive at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in fine form, sitting 25 points clear at the top of the Premier League and unbeaten in eight round of 16 Champions League matches.

The form of the Reds is a scary prospect for any team and is one of many reasons why Spanish midfielder Saul is cautious about the last-16 tie.

He told the Mail: "They always find a way [to win], sometimes in the last minutes, and that tells you something about what they have inside, their character.

"It’s not luck, it’s work."

Saul also discussed the importance of the Liverpool captain, suggesting that he is the glue that knits the team together.

He said: "They all run and press and they manage it so well because it’s not just running for the sake of running. It’s very well organised.

"And maybe some people don’t rate [Jordan] Henderson as highly as [Georginio] Wijnaldum, (Naby) Keita or Fabinho but I think he is the one that brings that team together."

Henderson is deservedly starting to receive praise for his impressive performances and is being tipped to win the Player of the Year award. Although it will please him receiving applause from his fellow professionals, with a Champions League tie just a day away, personal accolades will be the last thing on the Skipper's mind.
