Van Ginkel sends the ball under the keeper, just! PSV 1-0.

PSV will shoot first. Van Ginkel steps forward ...

Full-time: Atletico 0-0 PSV (agg: 0-0) PENALTY SHOOTOUT AHOY!

Mission almost accomplished for PSV. They have defended superbly but can they make it all worth it?

ET 29 min: Arias boots away another Atletico cross. They shall not pass.

PSV substitution: De Jong off, Narsingh. I can only assume Narsingh strikes a mean penalty and De Jong is utterly knackered. Taking off your top scorer seems odd at this point.

Updated

ET 27 min: Scrap that, maybe PSV are going to embellish their 1988 campaign: they’ve suddenly launched a counter-attack, and Guardado almost catches out the keeper with a shot from the corner of the box. But it flies over.

ET 26 min: Simeone is gesticulating maniacally from the sidelines. Doesn’t seem to be transmitting anything especially sophisticated. “Score a goal! Please score a goal!” seems to be about the gist of it. He knows that PSV are on the verge of doing a 1988 here ....[See preamble]

ET 24 min: A freekick to Atletico mid-way inside the opposing half. A chance to launch one ... or a chance to roll one to Gabri, who lets fly from 30 yards, with predictable consequences. What was that about running out of ideas?

ET 22 min: The suspense goes on. But no sign of any new ideas from Atletico. “Well, of course PSV want penalties,” hollers Ken Houghton. “They know Torres will take one for Atletico.”

ET 20 min: PSV enjoy a few second up the other end for the first time in a long time. Then Brenet gets all giddy and tries to burst the net from 30 yards. Instead he sends the ball rolling gently towards the photographers.

ET 19 min: Gabri hoiks in another decent cross from the right. Bruma nuts it away. PSV have had an answer for every question posed so far, and Atletico keeps asking the same one again and again.

ET 16 min: Atletico go long, more or less straight from the kick. Torres tries to take the ball on his chest in the box but goes down under pressure from Bruma. The crowd go bananas, but the ref is unmoved.

Atletico 0-0 PSV, end of first half of extra-time.

The ball seldom left the PSV half during that 15 minutes but the visitors defended with admirable authority.

ET 15 min: Atletico win a freekick at the edge of the box. Danger here for PSV. Gabi has a big run up ... and then bogs the ball high over the bar.

ET 14 min: Wondrous trickery by Saul! He seemed to be boxed in at the corner flag, then suddenly wriggled between two defenders with a lovely drag back. He ran into the box and pulled the ball back to Griezmann, who couldn’t get enough power into his shot. Comfortable save for the keeper.

ET 12 min: Griezmann curls a ball towards the back post. Saul darts from behind the last defender and tries to get a toe to the ball, but fails by an inch.

ET 10 min: Bruma has been superb so far. Nearly ever time the ball comes into the box, he is there to send it back out, a bouncer amongst men.

ET 8 min: PSV would take a shootout now, that much is clear.

ET 6 min: PSV continue to defend with numbers and vigilance. Kraevitter loses patience and tries to foil them from 25 yards. Instead he merely buoys the defence with a shot that veers way off target.

ET 4 min: Corner to Atletico, who’ve taken up almost permanent residence in the PSV half. Lucas meets the corner at the near post ... just six yards out .... and heads over! He’ll be seeing that miss at night for a long, long time.

ET 2 min: Koke grows tired of intricate build-ups and decides to have a ping from 25 yards. The ball dribbles 10 yards wide.

ET 1: Off we go. Ajax will be loving this - they have a big league game against PSV at the weekend.

Atletico 0-0 PSV, extra-time to come ...

A very accomplished and tenacious performance so far from both sides, except when the ball gets into the box, as finishing has been fractionally below tip-top. Atletico strikers’ positioning has been a little off at times, as well, as they’ve been provided with some excellent crosses but failed to get on the end of them. That is partially because of the diligence of the visiting defence, Cocu’s switch to three centrebacks paying off in style. Extra-time should be a treat.

90+1 min: What a tim for Zoet to make his first blunder of the night! He raced off his ball to try to clear an incming freekick, but he succeeded only in diverting it backwards. Fortunately for him, a team-mates stuck it out for a corner. And then Zoet made his second mistake! He fumbled the ball from the corner ... but collected it at the second attempt.

90 min: There are going to be at least three more minutes ...

Atletico substitution: Godin off, Hernandez on.

PSV substitution: Locadia off, Lestienne on.

86 min: Another decent ave by Zoet to push away Torres’ attempt to recreate Geoff Hurst’s third goal from the 1966 World Cup final.

85 min: Juanfran tries to clip a pass towards Griezmann, but Isimat-Mirin reads his intentions and moves across to intercept.

82 min: Griezmann has a go from 20 yards. His low shot is well hit - but not well enough to beat Zoet, who has been flawless so far.

81 min: This game really is being played at a rarefied level. The quality and intensity is so high that a moment’s lapse in concentration could cost the tie. The contest is properly taut. Extra-time looms but you get the sense there could be a game-changing flash at any moment ...

79 min: PSV win a corner following a bold move downfield and a shot by Arias that was deflected wide. But all that good work is undone by a rubbish delivery from the set-piece.

77 min: Torries attempts to lob Zoet from 16 yards but slightly misjudges his the effort and the ball drops on to the roof of the net.

76 min: That last chance amounts to Simeone almost backtracking on his first one, as the occasional threat from PSV has got him worried enough to reintroduce a holding midfielder for a striker.

Atletico substitution: Carrasco off, Kranevitter

PSV substitution: Willems off, Brenet on.

72 min: Willems nods a Filipe Luis cross out for a corner. From the setpiece the ball reaches Torres, who controls it and then has a blast on the half-volley .... but it ricochets off-target off one of his own players!

70 min: Brilliant tackle by Moreno on Torres to stop the striker from getting off a shot from 10 yards!

68 min: PSV launch another breakaway, and Locadia appears to be tripped at the edge of the area. But referee Clattenburg waves play on . Then Atletico rip forward and Torres goes down at the edge of the area - this time Clattenburg is correct to ignore the appeals for a freekick.

66 min: De Jong booked for a late tackle.

65 min: The pressure from Atletico is almost relentless now, but PSV’s concentration remains impeccable and they’re just about keeping the hosts at bay. and as they demonstrated a few minutes ago, they’re capable of bombing forward out of the blue and causing trouble for Atletico: get one exactly right and they could be through to the quarter-final.

63 min: Three minutes ago Filipe Luis was saving his team in his own box, but since then he has been prominent in their attacking. He has just zipped down the left and noodled a little ball through to Saul, who lashes it across the face of goal. PSV clear it for a corner, which Zoet then claims under pressure.

60 min: Filipe Luiz takes down a long diagonal ball at the corner of the PSV box. He shimmies in-field a little and then has a bang with his right-foot. The keeper punches it away.

58 min: Oh my! PSV put together their first really threatening move of the second half and Locadia tries a sneaky curler from the left-hand corner of the box. IT bounces on its way past the keeper, who manages to get a touch on it, all the same, and tips it on to the post! The ball bounces back to the edge of the six-yard box, where De Jong seems certain to stick it into the unguarded net, but Filipe Luis reacts faster than the striker and diverts the ball to safety What an escape for the home side!

57 min: That substitution reflects Atletico’s yearning for a goal, obviously, but also how much control they have taken since the interval. Simeone evidently reckoned he no longer needed a holding midfielder, so off came Fernandez for another striker.

Atletico substitution: Fernandez off, Torres on.

54 min: It’s been all-out defence by PSV in the last few minutes. But they’ve been tenacious and well organised enough to stop Madrid from creating any clear chances.

51 min: Atletico have cranked up the intensity and are making PSV backpedal frantically. But the defenders keep doing just enough to put the hosts off at the last. Fernandez tried to go more direct just now, having a pop from 25 yards, but Zoet saved his pea-roller without trouble.

49 min: Koke sends a corner to the back post. Gimenez outjumps the defender and bangs off a powerful downward header ... that bounces a couple of yards wide.

47 min: Saul glides into the box, then offloads to Carrasco who flights a splendid cross towards the back post. It provokes a scramble that ends with a corner for the hosts. And that, too, provokes chaos in the box, with De Jong impeding his own keeper. The ball almost drops to the feet of Griezman, but not quite, so Zoet is able to recover and dive on it.

46 min: The fourth quarter is under way. And within 30 seconds Gimenez has to make a critical last-ditch block to prevent Locadia from picking out De Jong in front of goal.

Half-time: Atletico 0-0 PSV

After a thoroughly engrossing half, we’re no closer to knowing who will reach the quarter-final. Something has got to give soon...

44 min: Immaculate defending by Propper, who steps in and takes the ball off Griezmann just as the striker was winding up a shot in the box.

42 min: The pressure from Atletico is mounting. PSV are having to strain to keep them at bay but are doing so, for now.

40 min: Fernandez nicks the ball mid-way inside the PSV half, then supplies Gabi, whose long-range shot is blocked by Propper.

38 min: Carrasco bounds down the left before cutting in-field and letting fly from 25 yards. It’s a reasonable effort, whizzing just over, but Zoet had it covered.

34 min: Great cross from Koke on the right. Carrasco meets it and sends it back towards the edge of the six-yard box, where Griezmann nods it towards goal. Zoet make a terrific reflex-save! That was the best chance of the match so far and it came after a period where PSV were starting to attack with real menace.

32 min: Propper, who has been excellent so far, delivers an outswinging corner. It runs all the way across to Willmens at the far corner of the box. He scuffs his shot into a mob of bodies in the six-yard box. After a bout of panic. Atletico clear.

29 min: Locadia booked for tugging Gimenez back.

27 min: Excellent play by PSV. This really as been ac accomplishment performance so far. They put together a lovely move just now, probing from left to right and back again before releasing Van Ginkel down the right. He sent a dangerous low ball towards De Jong, forcing Oblak to dive full-length to tip it away from the attack. Godin was able to tidy.

24 min: Propper, a dynamic influence, nicks the ball off Gabi in midfield and tries to instigate a counter-attack. But Atletico win it back quickly and race forward themselves. Arias puts an end to their raid with a crude tackle wide on the left. Freekick to Atletico. But the delivery is awful. So far, so satisfactory for PSV.

22 min: Koke makes a clever run wide and is rewarded with a fine pass from the back. The midfielder pings a low pass across the face of goal. Carrasco darts forward in a bid to meet it, but the ever-alert Zoet pounces first.

19 min: When PSV get the ball they tend to knock it about a bit, partially to probe, partially to rile the hosts, who are apt to lose their rags at any moment. Now and again, however, they try a quick long ball towards De Jong, who regularly pulls wide on to Juanfran, who can’t match him in the air. So far that tactic hasn’t led to a real opening but the threat is there, for sure.

17 min: A well-timed leap by Godin, a swivel of the neck and a strong header from corner. But the ball travels just over the bar. Zoet probably had it covered, anyway.

15 min: Brilliant move by Atletico, cutting the visiting defence apart and presenting Griezmann with a wonderful opportunity 12 yards out, in the middle of the goal. Juanfran pickd out Koke, who had made a smart dash down the right before feeding Griezmann. The Frenchman took one, slightly heavy touch before letting fire. Zoet was almost upon him by the time he got the shot off and was able to smother it.

13 min: An uncharacteristically sloppy touch from Godin almost sends the ball into the path of De Jong, but Juanfran retrieved it first.

10 min: Locadia is allowed to continue scampering down the left even though the ball had run an inch out of play. He fires over a decent cross, which is cleared to the edge of the area before being collected by a Dutchman, who unleashes the first shot of the match. It’s deflected wide for a corner, which Atletico defend well.

7 min: PSV are trying to puncture the hosts’ early vim now. To the audible annoyance of the crowd, they’re circulating the ball calmly despite Atletico’s frantic attempts to get it back.

4 min: Another flourish of class from Griezmann. He takes the ball on his chest, gets away from his marker with a swift burst and then slips the ball wide to Juanfran. The full-back’s cross is too long, however. Still, it’s been an engaging, high-tempo opening by both sides.

2 min: After intense skirmishing for the ball in midfield, possession changes hands several times before Griezmann skips away with the ball and suddenly finds himself within shooting distance. But he threads a lovely pass into the path of Carrasco. Zoet hurtles off his line to get there first. Fine goalkeeping to prevent PSV from having to devise a new game plan within two minutes of the start.

1 min: Off we go! And the singing turns to whistles as PSV slowly knock the ball around the back of their defence ...

Out march the teams - and the signing grows even louder! It’s a hair-raising atmosphere, but do PSV have what it takes to shut the locals up? The visitors are dressed in sky blue, while Atletico are in their familiar red and white striped jersey bearing that bear-robbing-strawberries crest.

There’s a delightful sing-song afoot in the Vicente Calderon. The home fans have been equipped with red and white slivers of plastic and a giant banner spelling out the Spanish for “Don’t stop Believing”. And yet the song they’re all signing is some local football chant, not Journey’s anthem to persistence in the face of hardship, rejection and in-form Dutch opponents:

PSV’s ploy for this game seems clear: deploying a back five for the first time this season suggests they’re going to try defend en masse and pinch a goal on the counter-attack or through set-pieces or, indeed, go all the way to a shoot-out.

Greizmann and Carrasco are the forwards most likely to thrill us tonight (and, indeed, Carrasco is a reason why Belgium need not fret if Eden Hazard shake off the blues before the Euros). Luuk de Jong does not quite seem to be in their class, though I’d be happy to be proven wrong on that. PSV, however, has been home to many, many great strikers, from Dillen through Van Nistelrooy, Ronaldo and this wicked genius:

Who would have thought that Marco Van Ginkel would be the last Chelsea player in the Champions League this season? Don’t fancy his chance of emulating Thibaut Courtois and winning the tournament while on loan from the Bridge, mind. Because that Atletico defence - featuring Filipe Luis, who Chlsea could have done with this season - is mighty stingy and those two young tricksters up top, Griezmann and Carrasco, are likely to tear the Dutch defence apart. PSV may have kept the Spaniards at bay with just 10 men in the first leg, but winning tonight would be a different level of achievement altogether.

“Who would have thought that PSV,a team I remember liking from the days of Philip Cocu, would rise to relevance again in the Champions League and are close to knocking out the mighty Atletico Madrid!” gasps Eza Finkelstein. By “the days of Philip Cocu”, he presumably means that day when Cocu was a dinky midfielder rather than PSV’s manager.

Preamble

Hello and welcome to a tie so finely balanced that you could put in a tutu and call it a ballerina. Atletico Madrid fancy their chances of reaching a third consecutive Champions League quarter-final after returning from Eindhoven with a 0-0 first-leg draw. They have won all four league matches that they have played since then, with the ever-more impressive Antoine Griezmann scoring in each one. Another goal from the Frenchman may prove enough to send Atletico through because Diego Simeone has built Europe’s meanest defence: Atletico have conceded only three times in the tournament so far and, ridiculously, only 12 goals in 29 matches in La Liga this season. So Atletico fancy their chances alright.

But PSV, who ousted Manchester United in the group stages, are in promising form themselves. They are top of the Dutch league thanks in part to the deadly finishing of Luuk de Jong, who is expected to return to the team tonight after missing the first leg. De Jong has scored for fun in Holland this season – 19 goals in 26 matches – so it will be interesting to see how he fares against Simeone’s dedicated killjoys.

For inspiration, PSV can look back to their proudest moment. 1987-88 was the greatest campaign in the club’s history thanks partially to their happy use of the away goals rule: after sealing the domestic double, Guus Hiddink’s team were crowned kings of the continent after winning only three of their nine matches in a triumphant European Cup campaign. They drew 0-0 at home in the quarter-final (v Bordeaux) and the semi-final (against Atletico’s dear neighbours, Real) but advanced each time thanks to 1-1 away draws (and then the beat Benfica in the final on penalties after a 0-0 draw). And if a completely different bunch of players could do it 28 years ago, then, er, PSV can do it tonight. Stay tuned!
