Atletico Madrid sell 'only 200 tickets' for Champions League match against Liverpool amid Coronavirus fears

Atletico Madrid have sold just 200 of their ticket allocation for Wednesday's Champions League match at Anfield amid growing Coronavirus fears, according to reports.

The Daily Mail states fans of the Spanish club are opting against making the trip to Merseyside due to rising Delta variant cases.

Liverpool welcome Atletico Madrid back to Anfield for the first time since their meeting in the round of 16 in March 2020.

Over 3,000 supporters travelled from the Spanish capital for what turned out to be the last major football match in England before the sport was brought to a shuddering halt.

The decision from the government and UEFA to let the match go ahead as normal, despite Madrid being at the centre of Europe's Covid-19 outbreak, has been met with criticism as preliminary reports reveal that 37 to 41 coronavirus deaths were linked to that match taking place.

Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders has revealed the club were also concerned with the decision to proceed as normal, even though the virus was rapidly spreading.

“Jurgen [Klopp] has said that was the first game he has gone into not in a football mood,” Lijnders told The Guardian.

“None of us knew what the influence of the pandemic would be on the football world or the world itself.

“But I remember us having discussions around that time about whether it was right for Madrid fans to come."

This time, Atletico Madrid fans won't be travelling in their numbers in hope of seeing their side produce a similar result to their last visit.

Liverpool were knocked out of the Champions League by Diego Simeone's side in 2019/20, but beat them 3-2 at the Wando Metropolitano in their group stage meeting last month.

A dramatic five-goal thriller saw Antoine Griezmann sent off for Atletico Madrid and a winning penalty for Mohamed Salah has set up a mouth-watering tie at Anfield this week.
