Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann fumes at ref after Liverpool loss

Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann appeared to be left fuming at refereeing decisions during his side's 2-0 loss to Liverpool on Wednesday night.

The France international was forced to watch the game after being banned following his red card when the two sides previously met in Spain.

But when Atletico defender Felipe kicked across the back of Liverpool forward Sadio Mane’s legs as he tried to launch a counter-attack referee Daniel Makkelie wasted no time in surprisingly issuing a red card.

Pundits and fans alike were left stunned that the defender was shown a straight red rather than a yellow card, The Mirror reports.

Speaking on commentary, former Liverpool ace Steve McManaman assumed the red card was for Felipe ignoring the referee several times.

He said: "I've no idea why he's given a red card... It's not a red for the tackle, it's a yellow. And then he does ask him, on a number of occasions, to come here."

Ex-Premier League striker Dion Dublin, meanwhile, told BBC Radio 5 Live: "You don't always see those given - I was expecting a yellow."

But UEFA have since confirmed Felipe was shown his marching orders for the tackle as he made no attempt to play the ball.

Griezmann tweeted moments later: "Against everything and against everyone #AtletiForever."

The Atletico forward had scored a brace for his side in the previous 2-2 group stage match between the two clubs before being given a straight red card for a high boot on Roberto Firmino.

But in Wednesday night's game, when Jota attempted an overhead kick and caught Kieran Trippier with a flying boot he was only given a yellow card.

Again, moments after the incident, in a tweet which included an eyebrow-raised emoji, Griezmann wrote: "Yellow at Anfield."
