Atletico Madrid receive blow ahead of Champions League tie against Chelsea after FA decision

Atletico Madrid defender Kieran Trippier has been banned for 10 weeks and fined £70,000 after breaking Football Association betting rules.

The former Tottenham right-back faced seven FA charges which occurred during his move to the Spanish capital in July 2019, with four proven and three dismissed by an independent regulatory commission.

His ban will apply worldwide until February 28, which rules him out of Atletico Madrid's first leg round of 16 tie with Chelsea on February 23.

The England international has been an ever-present for Atleti this season, and hasn't missed a single minute of football in La Liga so far.

Trippier's suspension will come as a huge blow to Atletico boss Diego Simeone, given their title ambitions.

Atletico sit top of the La Liga table, after their 2-0 win away at Real Sociedad on Tuesday night.

Speaking to the Guardian last season, Trippier admitted he was thriving since leaving Tottenham for the Spanish capital.

“I’m delighted to be part of this team and enjoying every single moment of playing abroad,” Trippier said.

“I didn’t want to come to the end of my career and regret not going. It is a big change, different culture, different types of football, but I am loving every minute of it and hopefully my performances for Atletico can keep me in the England squad.

"I want to play at the highest level for as long as I can in order to play for England. That’s my objective.”

The full-back also hailed Simeone's impact on his career.

"You have seen over many years how strong Atletico are. I’ve been here seven months and I’ve never seen anything like it, to be honest," he said.

"Starting from Diego Simeone – everyone feeds off him – he’s an unbelievable manager. I can’t really explain how good it is here, it is just an unbelievable feeling and I’m proud to be part of this team."
