Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo aims cheeky dig at Liverpool's Anfield ground

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has jokingly suggested that Liverpool’s Anfield ground isn’t fit for purpose.

Cerezo’s side head to Anfield in three weeks time with a slender lead in their Champions League last 16 tie.

Saul Niguez’s goal after just four minutes was enough to hand Diego Simeone’s side a 1-0 win at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium on Tuesday night, leaving the Reds with it all to do in the second leg.

“I always sleep well. There are days when you taste glory and others when you don’t,” Cerezo told Spanish publication AS after the victory.

“According to the media, a week ago we were dead and buried and now we are very much alive.

“They had gone 30 games unbeaten and people were saying they are the best team in the world.

“We are happy with the result but we still have another game to go. But we have rediscovered ourselves and that is the best news.”

“Anfield is a great stadium but it’s old. It probably wouldn’t pass the UEFA inspection if it had to do it," Cerezo added in jest when asked about his upcoming trip to Liverpool's famous stadium.

The return leg between the two sides will take place on Wednesday, 11 March at Anfield.
