Atletico Madrid fans think Kieran Trippier waved goodbye as Simeone admits he wants him to stay

Kieran Trippier was the last man off the field during Atletico Madrid's 2-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano - prompting more talk he is set to quit La Liga.

The right-back was a surprise choice of Diego Simeone for the clash in Spain's top-flight today but left the pitch after a lengthy walk around the stadium at the Metropolitano Stadium.

Before the game, one young Atletico fans held up a placard begging Trippier to stay but his future now depends on whether Newcastle or Chelsea up their bid to sign the England international.

An Atletico fan posted a Tweet and video reading: "Farewell to the fans?

"The last player to leave the field to say goodbye to the fans.

"Last dance?"

Trippier played the full 90 minutes against Rayo but the suggestions behind the scenes are that he still wants to leave Spain.

Atletico were short-handed, naming only seven subs, due to Covid issues in their squad but nevertheless took a risk in playing Trippier knowing he could be injured and potentially scuppering a deal.

Speaking after the game Simeone said: "We want him to stay, but you can’t force anyone to stay.

"An extraordinary player.

"What happens will depend on the footballer, we want him to stay.

"I don't know how we can retain anyone in life."
