Atletico Madrid chairman claims 'vertigo' will stop Liverpool in Champions League last 16 clash

Atletico Madrid's president, Enrique Cerezo, has claimed his team do not fear Liverpool ahead of their Champions League last-16 clash with the Reds , claiming that goalkeeper Jan Oblak will stop Mohamed Salah et al in their tracks.

The film producer, who has been Atletico's president since 2002, has courted controversy in the past, while he was not shy on giving his thoughts on the exit of forward Antoine Griezmann during the summer when he made the move to Barcelona.

As well as goalkeeper Oblak, Cerezo claimed that his club were favourites because they had already beaten the Reds in the recent past - winning on away goals in the UEFA Cup back in 2010, with ex-Manchester United forward Diego Forlan netting the decisive goal in extra-time.

On the upcoming Liverpool clash, Cerezo said, via Spanish newspaper Marca : "I think the vertigo has to hit Liverpool. We knew that Liverpool or any other could play us. It is not the first time we have eliminated them, we already eliminated them in UEFA.

"It is a great team, but we have Jan [Oblak]."

Atletico are currently fifth in the Spanish league standings, behind both Sevilla and Getafe, and they have only scored 18 goals in their 17 La Liga matches to date.

They confirmed their place as runners up to Juventus in their Champions League group with a 2-0 victory against Lokomotiv Moscow on matchday six.
