Atletico Madrid and Diego Simeone make Thomas Lemar decision that is bad news for Arsenal fans

Not long now until the January transfer window closes.

And it would appear that the future of Atletico Madrid winger Thomas Lemar has finally been resolved on deadline day amid links to Arsenal for the majority of the month.

Last week, Marca claimed that all roads were leading to north London in regards to where the Frenchman would be playing his football during the second half of the season as he was tipped to leave the Spanish capital so that Diego Simeone could free up wage space to sign a striker.

Furthermore, El Golazo De Gol claimed Lemar was close to joining the Gunners for €40m (£33m).

Amid all the speculation, Lemar was a notable absentee from Atletico training session and matchday squad for their La Liga clash against Leganes last weekend and the official word was that the Frenchman was suffering with Gastroenteritis.

However, the likelihood of the 24-year-old leaving Wanda Metropolitano were reduced when Atletico Madrid were unable to seal a deal for Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani.

Now talk of the former Monaco winger being moved on can be put to the side - at least until the summer transfer window.

This is because Simeone has decided to recall Lemar to his matchday squad for the huge Madrid derby at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday afternoon.

Barring a late miracle, the fact that Lemar is in the travelling party all but confirms he won't be going anywhere between now and 11pm.

This decision is likely to be seen as bad news for some Gunners supporters.

With Atletico bolstering their attacking options by signing Yannick Carrasco on loan, there was some optimism amongst the Gunners faithful that Thomas Lemar to Arsenal was on.

What is for certain is Lemar will have to prove he is worthy of a start against Real Madrid as his form since joining Atletico hasn't impressed Simeone.

"The facts speak for themselves, better than words," Simeone said earlier in the month, as per Get Football News France. "It is certain that he has not been able to show all his qualities. "Each time that he has been available, I have tried to play him. I have always been enthusiastic about his qualities as a player.

"He has not met the expectations set for him, but we have always had the same expectations.

"Today, who is to know if he will stay or not… His representatives are working hard. The clubs, they, operate on what they need."
