Atletico Madrid admit major Champions League concern ahead of Liverpool clash

Atletico Madrid admit they are fearful of a repeat of last season's Champions League collapse when they visit Liverpool this week.

The Spanish side are at Anfield on Wednesday aiming to defend a 1-0 first-leg lead in their return round of 16 clash against the European and world champions.

Diego Simeone's men surrendered a 2-0 advantage at this stage of the competition last season by losing the second leg at Juventus 3-0.

And Atletico skipper Koke has implored his team-mates to learn the lessons of that chastening setback.

"We're going there to compete," he said. "Liverpool are a great opponent and it will be very difficult.

"They are the champions. We will have to do a great job to go through.

"Liverpool have had some defeats but nothing influences the Champions League."

Koke, speaking to Marca, added: "We have to learn from Turin so that it doesn't happen again. It wasn't us at at any time. We know that if we are aggressive then we can compete against Liverpool.

"We won't feel comfortable there. Anything can happen but we can't forget who we are."

Liverpool had lost three of their previous four games before arresting the mini-slump with a 2-1 Premier League win over Bournemouth on Saturday.

And Atletico midfielder Marcos Llorente is convinced the Reds' recent travails will count for nothing in midweek.

"I haven't seen their games but I know about their recent results," said Llorente to Marca. "But the Champions League is a different competition.

"It will be difficult. It was for us here (in Madrid) and it won't be any less (at Anfield)."
