Atletico Madrid 2 Dortmund 0: Antoine Griezmann hands Atleti Champions League boost

Goals from Saul Niguez and Antoine Griezmann gave Atletico Madrid a 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund to leave both sides within touching distance of the Champions League knockout stages.

The result keeps the race to top Group A alive, with Dortmund leading only on head-to-head and both teams five points clear of third placed Club Brugge.

England youngster Jadon Sancho was included from the start as Dortmund looked for a repeat of the 4-0 trouncing they had handed Atletico in Germany a fortnight ago.

The hosts meanwhile, were without several first team regulars, including Diego Godin, Koke and Diego Costa.

For half an hour, Dortmund dominated possession without troubling Jan Oblak in the Atletico goal, while Diego Simeone's side sat off and broke the game up with a series of niggly fouls.

However, the game sparked into life when Saul opened the scoring via the leg of Manuel Akanji after a clever one-two with Filipe Luis.

Atletico almost doubled the lead minutes later when Thomas Partey clipped the bar from range, before Saul lashed wide from an Angel Correa cross as Dortmund held on for the half-time whistle.

Substitute Raphael Guerreiro, who scored twice off the bench in the first game, headed over from six yards after a terrific cross from Paco Alcacer as Dortmund looked for a leveller.

But it was Atletico who made sure, capping a textbook Simeone performance when Griezmann polished off a late counter attack.
