Atletico Madrid 0-0 Real Madrid: Jan Oblak makes stunning save as derby ends goalless

Real Madrid remain top of La Liga after a goalless game away to city rivals Atletico at the Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday night.

Zinedine Zidane’s side had moved into the lead with six games played after beating Osasuna 2-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday night.

That victory had come with a virtual second string, but most of his big names returned to the line-up for this one as Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema and Eden Hazard all started.

But Atletico, without Alvaro Morata after the Spain striker was sent off against Mallorca in a 2-0 win also on Wednesday, had the better of a hard-fought first half.

Joao Felix flashed an effort across goal early on as he broke clear on the right, while the Portuguese sensation also came close with a fierce drive from outside the box later in the half.

Midfielder Thomas Partey and right-back Kieran Trippier, a positive presence all evening on his side, put dangerous balls into the area from that flank and both needed just a touch.

Atletico boss Diego Simeone sent on Angel Correa for Vitolo in the second half and he headed over soon after coming on.

Bale got into some good positions at the other end, but hit two efforts way over the top and Madrid’s best chance was a late header from Benzema which brought a stunning save from Jan Oblak as the Slovenian got down low to his left to push the Frenchman's effort away.

The result was probably fair in the end as neither side did enough to win. Madrid stay top with 15 points from their seven games, with Atleti one further back in third and Barca on 13 in fourth after their 2-0 victory at Getafe earlier on Saturday.
