May 30--The Atlanta Falcons parted ways with Prince Shembo on Friday after a warrant was issued in connection to accusations the linebacker killed his girlfriend's dog.
"We are aware of the charges that have been filed against Prince Shembo," said a statement released by the Falcons. "We are extremely disappointed that one of our players is involved in something like this. Accordingly, we have decided to waive Prince Shembo."
A warrant for aggravated cruelty to animals was issued for Shembo, 23, after his now ex-girlfriend, Denicia Williams, told police the second-year player killed her Yorkie, according to a news release from Gwinnett County police.
The dog was found to have severe injuries, later revealed to be blunt force trauma, after being in the care of Shembo, according to the release. It died as a result of those injuries.
According to police, Shembo told Williams he had kicked the dog.
This marks the second time in one week an NFL team has cut ties with a player following criminal allegations.
The Chicago Bears released defensive tackle Ray McDonald on Monday following his arrest on suspicion of domestic violence and child endangerment after he allegedly assaulted a woman while she was holding a baby at a residence.
McDonald, 30, was arrested again Wednesday for allegedly violating a restraining order stemming from Monday's arrest.
