Athletics World Championships: Norwegian star Jakob Ingebrigtsen disqualified from 5000m

Norwegian teen sensation Jakob Ingebrigtsen has been disqualified from the 5,000m at the Athletics World Championships in Doha.

The 19-year-old, competing at his first global championships, had been tipped to be one of the stars of the competition, and looked to have got off to the perfect start after comfortably qualifying for the 5,000m final by finishing fourth in his heat.

However, replays showed him stepping on the inside of the track after appearing to be bumped by a rival during the race, and despite the infraction appearing relatively minor, he was scratched from the final result, though the Norwegian federation could yet launch an appeal.

The decision means that Britain’s Andy Butchart will advance to Monday’s final as a fastest loser, after he was elevated to sixth place.

Ingebrigtsen is also entered in the 1500m later in the week, where he is a serious medal contender. He won gold at last year’s European Championships in both the 1500m and 5000m.
