Athletic Club vs Arsenal LIVE: Champions League match stream, latest score and goal updates

LIVE: Athletic Club vs Arsenal - (Getty Images)

Athletic Club vs Arsenal LIVE!

Arsenal begin their latest bid for Champions League glory in Bilbao tonight. The Gunners travel to the Basque Country hoping to deliver an early statement victory in this season’s league phase to show there will be no lasting hangover from last year’s agonising semi-final defeat by eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain. Mikel Arteta’s side should be in good spirits at San Mames after bouncing back from their narrow loss at Liverpool before the international break by brushing aside Nottingham Forest at the weekend.

However, Arsenal are facing yet more injury strife with captain Martin Odegaard unavailable this evening with another shoulder issue, joining Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus on the sidelines. William Saliba is available again after an ankle problem, though he settles for a place on the bench.

Athletic Club had won all of their first three games in LaLiga before Saturday’s surprise home defeat by Alaves, with long-time Arsenal transfer target Nico Williams currently out with an injury suffered on international duty with Spain. Ernesto Valverde’s team reached the semi-finals of the Europa League last season but have not played at this level since 2014/15. Follow Athletic Club vs Arsenal live below!

Gyokeres left bloodied

18:43 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Viktor Gyokeres was left bloodied by a clash of heads with Gabriel as Arsenal returned to the Champions League on Tuesday evening.

The Gunners pair climbed to meet Declan Rice's inswinging free kick midway through the first half against Athletic Bilbao, but as Gyokeres made contact with the ball, Gabriel made contact with the back of the striker's head.

As Mikel Arteta stood on the touchline grimacing at a nasty-looking collision, Arsenal medical staff rushed onto the pitch to treat Gyokeres, with blood soon seen pouring from the back of his head.

Gyokere was thankfully OK to continue, and Gabriel quickly apologised for his involvement.

"We want to come here and dominate the game. We've done it in various countries last season in a really convincing way and that is what it requires.

“We need to play with a lot of personality and authority and that is what we will try to do."

Arsenal in Spain

Arsenal have a fantastic recent record against Spanish opposition.

Across the last two seasons, the Gunners have won all five of their Champions League games against Spanish sides, with three of those victories coming away from home.

This includes a 2-1 win over Real Madrid in April.

Dowman could make history

17:00 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Max Dowman is on the bench for Arsenal today and he could become the youngest player in Champions League history if he appears against Athletic Club.

The record is currently held by Youssoufa Moukoko, who played for Borussia Dortmund at the age of 16 years 18 days in 2020.

Dowman does not turn 16 until December 31 and there are six Champions League league phases matches before then.

Standard Sport's Sam Tabuteau

William Saliba is only fit for enough for the bench. The impressive Cristhian Mosquera continues in his place.

Mikel Arteta has also opted for a midfield three of Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi and Mikel Merino in Martin Odegaard’s absence.

Strong lineup despite all the talk around injuries.

Athletic Club injury blow

16:50 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

A massive blow for Athletic Club in that star man Nico Williams is unavailable for selection against Arsenal this evening.

It looks like Robert Navarro will be tasked with operating from the left with Inaki Williams on the opposite flank.

There is a change in attack from the weekend’s loss to Alaves with Alex Berenguer leading the line instead of Gorka Guruzeta who drops to the bench.

Arsenal change

16:45 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Just the one change for Arsenal this evening as Declan Rice replaces captain Martin Odegaard.

William Saliba returns to the matchday squad, but has to settle for a place on the bench as Cristhian Mosquera continues alongside Gabriel in central defence.

There is also a place among the substitutes for summer signing Christian Norgaard.

Ernesto Valverde dubs Mikel Arteta 'one of the best in the world'

16:11 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Athletic Club head coach Ernesto Valverde said Mikel Arteta is “one of the best coaches in the world” as he prepares to face Arsenal in the Champions League.

The Gunners will travel to the Estadio San Mames today as they look to improve on last year’s semi-final finish in the UEFA’s top competition.

Arteta’s Arsenal outclassed Athletic Club in a pre-season friendly in early August, winning 3-0, but there is far more on the line for the rematch.

Meeting the press before the match, though, Valverde made the surprise admission that his countryman Arteta is in the upper echelons of managerial talent.

Mikel Arteta bemoans mounting Arsenal injuries

16:05 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Mikel Arteta said Arsenal need a fully fit squad if they are to compete for the Champions League this season.

Arsenal start their European campaign today, but while William Saliba is set to return following an ankle injury, Arteta will be without the likes of Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka for their game against Athletic Club.

The Gunners had to contend without Gabriel and Kai Havertz as they were knocked out by eventual winners PSG in the Champions League semi-finals last year, and Arteta says he needs better injury luck if his side are to go a step further this season and lift the trophy.

Predicted Arsenal XI

16:00 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Martin Odegaard’s injury leaves Mikel Arteta with some decisions to make in midfield.

Against Forest, he opted to bring on Ethan Nwaneri as a like-for-like replacement for Odegaard.

However, with Declan Rice given a rest at the weekend, the England midfielder looks set to come back into the side.

Meanwhile, Arsenal’s new look frontline of Noni Madueke, Viktor Gyokeres, and Eberechi Eze looks set to get another chance to impress, with Bukayo Saka still missing.

Arsenal predicted XI (4-3-3): Raya; Timber, Saliba, Gabriel, Calafiori; Rice, Zubimendi, Merino; Madueke, Gyokeres, Eze.

Arsenal handed injury boost

15:55 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Arsenal have been boosted by some good news at the start of a big week.

The Gunners kick-off their Champions League campaign against Athletic Bilbao in Spain today and then face Manchester City at Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

There was a welcome sight for Mikel Arteta ahead of that huge Premier League showdown as the Arsenal squad trained at London Colney on Monday.

One key player appears to winning his race to be fit to face Manchester City.

William Saliba returned to training last week but missed Saturday’s 3-0 win against Nottingham Forest with the ankle injury he suffered at Liverpool last month.

Head to head (h2h) history and results

15:40 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

This will be the first-ever competitive meeting between the two clubs in Europe.

They did, however, face off in a pre-season fixture last month with Arsenal winning 3-0 to claim the Emirates Cup.

Score prediction

15:35 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

That easy win over Forest was just the tonic for Arsenal after the questions raised again about their big-game mentality and Arteta’s conservative approach after being edged out at Anfield prior to the international break, though he could have done without more injury concerns.

The Gunners have key games against City and Newcastle this month that could potentially disrupt from the early stages of their Champions League campaign, with Olympiacos visiting the Emirates in a fortnight’s time.

Athletic’s impressive early season momentum was halted by that shock home loss to Alaves, while Nico Williams will be a huge miss. We expect the visitors to edge a tight contest.

Arsenal team news: Saliba should return

15:30 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Mikel Arteta has confirmed Martin Odegaard, Ben White, Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus are all sidelined for the Gunners this evening.

However, William Saliba has recovered earlier than expected following an ankle issue, while summer signing Christian Norgaard will hope to be in the squad.

Athletic Club team news: Nico Williams absent

15:25 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Athletic star and rumoured long-time Arsenal transfer target Nico Williams will miss out on with an adductor issue suffered during Spain’s Mikel Merino-inspired 6-0 drubbing of Turkey in World Cup qualifying last week.

Benat Prados and Unai Egiluz are definitely out due to injury, while defender Yeray Alvarez is serving a 10-month UEFA ban for a failed doping test last season.
