Iñaki Williams has signed a new contract with Athletic Bilbao that includes a release clause of €50m to ward off interest from several English clubs for the Spain Under-21 forward.

Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham have scouted the 21-year-old, who is a product of Bilbao’s academy, in recent weeks and were aware of his contract situation. However, with Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid also rumoured to be interested in signing Williams, the Basque club has now secured one of its brightest prospects until 2021.

“Athletic Club and Iñaki Williams have signed the renewal agreement by which the player will remain in the club until 30 June 2021,” read a statement on Athletic’s website. “The cancellation clause will be €50m.”

Williams, born in Bilbao to a Ghanaian father and Liberian mother, has earned rave reviews this season having scored 10 goals playing as a winger. He posted a picture of him signing his contract on Thursday with the message: “I’m where I want to be. Now and always. Come on Athletic!”
