Athlete's poverty draws Delhi CM's attention; govt pays 3 lakh

NEW DELHI: Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday handed over a cheque of Rs 3 lakh to young athlete Lokesh Kumar, a Delhi government student, who has proved his mettle in running but is, unfortunately, facing financial difficulties. The financial support has been given under the government’s "Play and Progress Scheme".

Kejriwal, who learned about Kumar’s financial distress through social media, said the Delhi government will not let the lack of money come in the way of prospering talent.

Delhi Government has started a scheme, "Play and Progress", vide which financial assistance is provided to the school level sportspersons. This aid is provided so they can receive training and groom their talent for participation at a higher level of competition.

Kumar’s father is a rickshaw puller and his mother works as a house help. He has been constantly making it to the podium in 100 meter, 300 meter and 400 meter individual run under-16 category. In the recently concluded Delhi State meet, he bagged silver medal in 100 meters in under-16 category.
