Athens turned into snow-globe scene as city wakes on Tuesday to a rare snowfall

The ancient monuments in Athens became the props for a winter wonderland on Tuesday as the Acropolis got a rare dusting of snow.

Temperatures across Greece hit record lows, turning the capital into a snow-globe scene to the delight of tourists.

But, locals had to contend with transport being brought to a standstill as ice made roads impassable, according to Reuters.

Schools were also closed in the Athens region.

In the northern city of Florina, the mercury dropped to an all-time low of -23 degrees Celsius and highways, rail and bus services were disrupted across the area.
