RALEIGH, N.C. _ Anthony Mantha scored twice and the Detroit Red Wings rolled through their challenging schedule with another victory.
Andreas Athanasiou scored in overtime for a second straight day to push the Wings past the Carolina Hurricanes, 4-3, Monday at PNC Arena, earning the Wings as 2-0 start as they play three times in three days.
Athanasioiu was pushed into goaltender Eddie Lack on the play, and Lack received medical attention on the ice. Wings players stayed on the ice as Lack was being helped onto a stretcher.
Lack gave a thumbs up as he was carted off the ice.
Mantha scored his 16th and 17th goals of the season in 1:10 in the second period, but the Hurricanes used a barrage of shots to get it to 2-2 entering the third period. The Wings had been outshot, 29-15, through two periods.
They got a power play 9 seconds into the third period but Lack stopped Mike Green's slap shot and Athanasiou shot wide. Tomas Tatar scored a power play for the second time in two days when he converted a set-up by Gustav Nyquist, at 8:30, as the Wings dominated offensively. Petr Mrazek, who had 39 saves, did not see a shot in the third period until 8 minutes left in regulation when Jeff Skinner took aim.
The Hurricanes pressed hard in the final 5 minutes, and Justin Faulk scored again with 51.1 seconds left as the Wings went past regulation for the fourth straight game.
The game was the make-up for the Dec. 19 game that ended up being postponed because of poor ice conditions at PNC Arena. The Wings had played Sunday, beating Minnesota at home in overtime, and face the Hurricanes again Tuesday, adding up to three games in three days, four in five, and five in seven.
The game saw the return of Darren Helm after sitting out four with a knee injury; but as they gained one skater they lost another, as Luke Glendening left after the first period because of a lower-body injury.
The Wings fell behind, 1-0, 5 minutes into the game when Skinner fired a shot from the right circle that appeared to hit Green before slipping by Mrazek. The Hurricanes grabbed momentum and racked up one shot after another, including three during a power play cut short when Jordan Staal went for high-sticking Robbie Russo. One of the better chances the Wings had was Helm going on a breakaway, but he was not able to beat Lack. Shots were 12-6 to the Hurricanes after the first period.
Too many men on the ice left the Wings shorthanded early in the second period. Mrazek scooped a Teuvo Teravainen shot into the chest and got a little luck when Lee Stempniak had a good chance from the right side only to hit the goal post. The Wings, meanwhile, mustered two shots on net through the first 8 minutes. The next two they made count: Mantha got the puck off a Teravainen giveaway at Detroit's blue line and took off, breaking away to roof the puck at 9:04.
Mantha scored again at 10:14 when he got the puck from Athanasiou, skated to the net and flipped a backhand behind Lack.
Mrazek made three saves on Skinner during a third penalty kill, but the Wings were not able to protect their lead through the period. With 57.5 seconds left, it got to 2-2 when Faulk fired through traffic and beat Mrazek blocker side.
