Atalanta striker Duvan Zapata sends warning to Liverpool defence

Atalanta are ready to "hurt" Liverpool when the Reds continue their Champions League campaign in Italy.

The Premier League and world champions will aim to extend their 100% start to group D when they take on the Serie A side in Bergamo on Tuesday.

Jurgen Klopp's side are two points ahead of the Italians having won their opening games at Ajax and at home against FC Midtjylland.

Atalanta, though, are regarded their toughest opponents in the section, having finished third last season while notching 98 goals - the highest tally in Italy's top division in more than 60 years.

And striker Duvan Zapata believes the Liverpool defence can expect a thorough examination.

“It is not going to be be an easy game," said the Colombia international.

"They won the Champions League two years ago and won the Premier League last season so it is a major side internationally.

"But it is going to be tough for their defence as well because we have quality attacking and we will have our chances.

"We can hurt them if we are able to play our game.

“They know how we attack and it will be fundamental for us to play a significant role when we are attacking and defending as well. Our attacking game will have to be as intense as theirs, it will be fundamental if we are to win."

Liverpool are missing a number of key defenders, but Zapata added: "It doesn't matter if they have these absences. I know they are going to have very experienced players coming in.

"We are going to go face a very strong side so it is not going to be important. We are going to have to play a very important game."

Atalanta played Manchester City at the same stage of the competition last season, losing 5-1 away but drawing the return game 1-1.

And boss Gian Piero Gasperini said: "Both Man City and Liverpool are sides of great value and this will be a great opportunity for us to play against one of the world's best teams and we will be able to see how competitive we are.

"After the City games we gained experience, knowledge and ability and that was useful for the rest of our season. We also gained a few points and in football not always the best team wins."

Atalanta will be without German left-back Robin Gosens through injury.
