Atalanta deserved to beat Manchester United in Champions League, Gian Piero Gasperini claims

Gian Piero Gasperini believes Atalanta 'deserved' to beat Manchester United in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Atalanta took the lead versus United before Cristiano Ronaldo finished an outstanding team goal on the stroke of half-time to level the score, however, the hosts wouldn't need long in the second half to regain their advantage despite United looking improved.

Gasperini's side took the lead again thanks to Duvan Zapata, who Harry Maguire struggled to handle in defence all night, who raced through and beat David de Gea.

Ronaldo has delivered when United have needed him most since his return this summer and Tuesday night was no different.

The former Juventus star is no stranger to Atalanta and his stoppage-time volley meant United salvaged a 2-2 draw.

Gasperini was asked how frustrated he was after the game and his answer was not surprising.

"On a scale of one to 100, 1,000. We believed we could [win the game] do it," Gasperini said.

"It looked like they were all out of puff but we came up against an incredible player tonight. We can still make it through. It is still in our own hands. On Saturday we equalised in the last minute against Lazio, that is part and parcel of football.

"We deserved to win tonight but we have to accept the result."
