They lost their beloved daughter Sophie to cancer in 2010.

But instead of dealing with their grief together, alcoholic Helena Karine Atay plunged a knife into the heart of her husband Atakan Atay as he tried to stop her leaving the house to buy more wine.

The 42-year-old claimed she stabbed Atakan, 45, in self defence.

A jury found her guilty of manslaughter last year.

She was found not guilty of murder on the basis of a lack of intent.

Atay was jailed for 14 years for the killing at the couple’s home in Birtley, Gateshead, in October, 2018

Newcastle Crown Court heard Atay had been abusing alcohol ‘for at least a decade before the killing’ and had developed a pathological bereavement disorder after the death of the couple’s two-year-old daughter.

Prosecutor John Elvidge QC read from victim personal statements by Atakan’s family.

One described Atakan as ‘the apple of their family’ while another said he was ‘such a good man who did his best for everyone’.

His mother said: “My beloved Atakan, your mother has no strength left to stand this pain any longer.
