At what age should you control your online identity?

If you are a young person in your late teens, you have probably grown up with landmarks of your life being shared on Facebook - by friends and family, and then, by yourself. At what age does an individual take control of their online identity and ask their parents to stop posting updates and pictures?

We would like to hear from young people over the age of 16 about how and when you took control of your identity on social networking sites.

In their wisdom and their love, parents sometimes are given to oversharing. Do you feel your own identity has ever been compromised by your parents’ or carers’ oversharing on social networking sites? And if so, what did you do about it?

We are looking for contributions to include in an article reporting on these issues. Just to let you know we can only publish content from people aged 16 or over.

You can share your views by clicking on the blue ‘Contribute’ button on this article. You can also use the GuardianWitness smartphone app or the Guardian app and search for ‘GuardianWitness assignments’.

If you’d prefer to share your experiences anonymously then please fill in the form below. You don’t need to supply your real name, but please do leave contact details if you’re happy for us to get in touch. You can also email us at guardian.witness@theguardian.com
