'At the heart of our family': Will and Kate reveal their dog Lupo has died

Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge's cocker spaniel Lupo has died.

The UK family revealed the news on their Instagram account, kensingtonroyal, on Sunday UK time.

"Very sadly last weekend our dear dog, Lupo, passed away," the Instagram post said.

"He has been at the heart of our family for the past nine years and we will miss him so much."

The family got the dog in 2012 to keep the duchess company when Prince William was posted to the Falkland Islands.

"For me, Catherine and now little George are my priorities. And Lupo," he told CNN in 2013.

Lupo was bred from a dog owned by the duchess's parents in December 2011.

The duchess's brother, James Middleton, also posted a photo of Lupo on his Instagram page along with a touching message.

"Nothing can ever prepare you for the loss of a dog," he said.

British author Aby King wrote a series of children's books inspired by the pooch, called Lupo — The Adventures of a Royal Dog.

Lupo caused a mild stir after Prince William and Catherine released a photo of Prince George letting the dog lick an ice cream.

The RSPCA warned that giving pets dairy products could be bad for them.
