Phil Mickelson has a title to defend this week at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. No matter how the week finishes, Mickelson will leave Pebble Beach with his share of headlines.
Early week, he expressed his disagreement with the USGA’s distance report findings and also made it clear that he would not accept a special exemption into the U.S. Open, should he need it to get in the field (Mickelson is not the kind of guy to accept handouts).
Mickelson aside, it’s a deep field that will play this week’s tour stop alongside the traditional amateur contingent. Patrick Cantlay, Dustin Johnson and Paul Casey are among the top-ranked players going in.
Johnson, the highest-ranked player in the field at No. 5 in the Official World Golf Ranking, is paired with Jordan Spieth at Spyglass Hill in the first round. The group will tee off from the first hole at 12:50 p.m. ET.
