'At least' four omicron cases in Bolton confirmed by lab

'At least' four cases of the omicron Covid-19 variant have now been confirmed in Bolton.

Last week, health chiefs announced two ‘highly probable’ omicron infections had been identified in the borough — but were awaiting final laboratory confirmation to say for definite.

Now, officials say those results are back, finding 'at least four' cases of the variant in the borough.

Following the news, the borough's director of public health, Dr Helen Lowey, says 'robust contact tracing' has started for the individuals.

“Last week, we identified a number of ‘highly probable’ cases of the Omicron variant," she said in a statement. “We have now confirmed there are at least four cases of this new variant of Covid-19 in Bolton.

“Robust contact tracing has already taken place and those concerned have been asked to self-isolate in line with the latest government guidance."

“It is more important than ever that we all follow the rules and take simple steps to keep each other safe."

New rules brought in to combat the spread of the variant include the reintroduction of mandatory face-covering in shops and on public transport, plus tightened regulations around international travel.

Following the news, health bosses are urging residents to get jabbed as soon as possible — believing vaccination is the best way to combat infection.

“The vaccine remains our best defence against the virus and everyone who is eligible should get both jabs and the booster as soon as possible," Dr Lowey added.

“Wear a face covering on public transport, in shops and in crowded areas and take a rapid test at home before meeting with others.

“If you have symptoms, you must stay at home and book a PCR test as soon as possible.

“Regular hand washing and keeping rooms well ventilated can also reduce the risk of Covid spreading.”

As of yesterday, 246 cases of the highly-infectious variant had been identified in the UK, according to UK Health Security Agency figures.

English infections accounted for the vast majority of those, at 197.
