At least eight hospitalised after hours of carnage on Irish roads in icy weather

At least eight people have been hospitalised in road crashes across Ireland between Thursday night and Friday morning.

Emergency services have been rushing to collisions and incidents nationwide due to slippery conditions.

Five teenagers were rushed to hospital late on Thursday after a bad crash on the Bog Road in Cork at 9:30pm.

Three males and two females aged in their teens were taken to Cork University Hospital to be treated for serious injuries - CorkBeo reports.

The carnage on roads has continued this morning with AA Roadwatch reporting a flurry of smashes and road closures.

Two people have been hospitalised after a two car crash on the N69 in Kerry this morning - neither are believed to be badly hurt.

The road was closed for a time but has since reopened.

Another man is in hospital with serious injuries after a collision on the N55 in Athlone, Westmeath.

Gardai have closed off this road as they deal with the incident.

A spokesman said: "Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of a road traffic collision this morning, Friday, 4 December 2020 on the N55 in Athlone, Co. Westmeath. One male has been taken to hospital for treatment for serious injuries."

The M1 in Louth was also closed for a while this morning for emergency gritting after a flurry of collisions.

The Garda spokesperson added: 'Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of multiple road traffic collisions on the M1 this morning, Friday, 4 December 2020 in Co. Louth. No serious injuries were reported and the road is currently open."
