At least 77 injured after gas cylinder explodes at cafe in southern Spain

At least 77 people have been injured after a gas cylinder exploded in a cafe in the Spanish town of Velez-Malaga on the southern coast, a spokesman for the Andalucia region's emergency unit said.

The spokesman said five people were being treated for serious injuries after the explosion at about 17:00 GMT during a festival in the town, which is close to the popular tourist destination of Malaga. Pictures show damage to the area around La Bohemia cafe.

None of those seriously injured were at risk of death, a spokesman for the local hospital said. The majority of injuries were cuts and bruises.

A local news website, La Opinion de Malaga, said a chef had raised the alarm shortly before the explosion.
