'At least 50' turned away at Ayr vaccine centre due to Covid jab shortage

People were turned away from an Ayrshire vaccine centre last night as they queued for their Covid booster.

Residents over the age of 50 stood waiting at Ayr Racecourse for almost an hour to be told there were no vaccines left.

It is understood the vaccine centre had prepared to give out 2,000 shots on Monday.

One man had an appointment booked at the centre but had to queue on arrival before being sent home.

William Browning, 56, arrived for his booster, scheduled for 6pm, but was sent home around 7.50pm.

William from Prestwick claims that at least 50 others all queued out into the car park were told to go home.

Workers at the centre told William and others waiting that they would have to go to the Troon drop-In centre or re-book their appointment.

William told Ayrshire Live: “I went to Ayr Racecourse for my Over-50s booster to wait for almost an hour to be told that they had no vaccines left.

“I was very dissatisfied as there were people who had visible disabilities being turned away and people had come from their work to be told there was nothing left.

“You can tell that people were in a rush to get their booster, I was offered it so I thought I may as well take it to protect others.

“I was offered to come back here and show my letter on Thursday but I am worried the same thing will happen.”

Health chiefs say the clinic was 'overbooked' due to a fault with the national booking system.

Lynne McNiven, public health director for NHS Ayrshire & Arran, said: "We are aware that on Monday, December 13, a number of individuals who attended Ayr Racecourse for vaccination were asked to return for their Covid-19 booster vaccination at a later time.

"Those impacted were provided details on when they should attend to be vaccinated this week. We apologise to everyone affected for any inconvenience caused."
