At least 5 killed after collapse at illegal mining operation in China

At least five people were killed and one other injured after a collapse at an illegal mining operation in southwest China’s Yunnan province on Sunday, AP reported citing state-run Xinhua news agency.

The incident occurred at around 4.30 am in Baiwu village in Huize County. However, it was not specified that what type of mine was involved.

Six people were trapped following the collapse. Rescue teams recovered all of them from the site and transported them to hospital, where five later died from their injuries. The surviving individual was reported to be in stable condition.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the collapse.

The incident comes just over a week after a coal mine explosion in northern China’s Shanxi province killed at least 82 people. Local officials had said the operator of that mine was involved in “serious violations” of the law.
