At least 4 people shot after funeral service on Chicago's South Side

CHICAGO _ At least four people were shot after a funeral service in the Burnside neighborhood on Chicago's South Side Monday afternoon, authorities said.

The shooting took place around 12:20 p.m. in the 9200 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue, police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a tweet.

"Early reports indicate the shooting allegedly occurred ... as the services ended and people were getting in their cars," he said.

Three people were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center for treatment of gunshot wounds, while a fourth was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, a Fire Department spokesman said.

None of the shootings have been reported to be fatal as of 2 p.m., Guglielmi said.

The shooting appears to have happened outside of Bethlehem Star Missionary Baptist Church.

Bernie Jordan, 60, was on his way home from visiting his sister Monday morning. He got off the bus between Cottage Grove Avenue and 92 Street when he said he saw a man jump out of a black car with a large gun with a "long, tall straight clip" attached. Two "boys with big ass guns started shooting," he said.

And Jordan started running.

"It scared me, man," he said, imitating how he ducked and ran behind a building, taking a long detour to get to his home only a block away. "There were bullets flying every place down there."

Jordan said he heard two rounds of shots, one with about 15 shots, the other 30.

"This used to be a nice neighborhood," said Jordan, who's lived here for 30 years. "But now, shoot, they're into a war over here."

A 17-year-old boy was seriously injured when he was shot in the leg in front of the same church last September. The boy hobbled into the church for help after the shooting, according to local news reports.

A gunman had fired near the church while it celebrated its 25th anniversary, WGN reported at the time. A man inside the church was also grazed in the head, the station reported.

The scene is also several blocks from Chatham Academy High School, where three teens were shot and injured outside of the school last month. The teens _ 16, 17 and 18 _ were shot in the 700 block of East 91st Street. Two of them rushed back into the school for help.
