At least 35 injured as Air Canada flight hits severe turbulence

At least 35 passengers were injured as an Air Canada flight hit a severe patch of turbulence.

The plane, carrying about 285 people, had been flying from Vancouver to Sydney on Thursday.

But it was forced to divert to Hawaii after the aircraft "encountered forecasted and sudden turbulence,” the carrier said.

Those on board described how there was “screaming and panic” as the plane “dropped” significantly.

“All of a sudden, the plane dropped,” passenger Michael Bailey told Hawaii New Now.

“Must’ve dropped about 100 feet or something because we all went up to the ceiling like throughout the plane. It was pretty scary."

About 35 people suffered minor injuries in the turbulence, with at least nine being rushed to hospital.

All customers except one had now left the hospital, a spokesperson for Air Canada said.

Emergency responders were seen treating a passenger on the plane after it landed at Daniel K Inouye International Airport in Honolulu.
