At least 30 killed as two trains collide in major disaster in Pakistan

At least 30 people are reported to have been killed in Pakistan after a collision between two trains.

Dozens of people have also been reported injured with workers still fighting to free those who are still trapped in the wreckage.

Local news claim that the crash took place between the Millat Express and Sir Syed Express in Daharki.

Clips appearing online show the aftermath of the crash with a number of carriages having derailed and turned onto their side.

Rescue teams are said to have been dispatched from Sukkur and Sadiqabad and are working at the scene to free those still trapped.

Senior district police official Umar Tufail confirmed that at least 30 people had died but that the death toll could rise.

Dunya News reports, citing unnamed sources, that the Millat Express was on its way to Sargodha from Karachi while the Sir Syed Express was heading to Karachi from Lahore.

The publication says that the numbers of causalities could rise further as several passengers are still trapped.

Speaking to Geo News, Ghotki Deputy Commissioner Usman Abdullah said that an emergency had been declared at hospitals in Ghotki, Dharki, Obaro and Mirpur Mathelo.

It wasn’t immediately clear what had caused the derailment and the subsequent collision, Abdullah said.

"This is a challenging task. It will take time to use heavy machinery to free citizens (still trapped). We are also establishing a medical camp to provide medical aid to citizens," he said.

Train crashes in the country are relatively common and earlier this year another collision claimed at least one life and injured dozens more.

About 30 people were reportedly left injured when a number of coaches of a Lahore-bound Karachi Express train derailed between Mando Dero and Sanghi railway stations near Rohri in March.

In July last year at least 20 people were reportedly killed when the Shah Hussain Express train slammed into a vehicle near Sheikhupura in Punjab.
