Imelda Marcos has 260 guests fall ill with 'food poisoning' at 90th birthday party

More than 200 guests at a birthday party fell ill with suspected food poisoning today.

Ambulances rushed people to hospital after they started vomiting and complaining of dizziness at the venue.

Imelda Marcos, the notorious ex-first lady of the Philippines, was celebrating turning 90 at a sports stadium in Manila in the country.

Around 2,500 of her friends and family were present for the songs and speeches but the bash ended in disaster.

Philippine Red Cross chairman Richard Gordon said: "Our ambulances took people to hospital after they complained of dizziness and vomiting. They apparently suffered from food poisoning."

And health secretary Francisco Duque told reporters the number ill reached 260.

It is not thought Ms Marcos is among those unwell.

She is the widow of the country's late dictator Ferdinand Marcos , who was chased from power by a 1986 peaceful uprising.

The family is still revered by many in the Philippines and has made a political comeback in recent years.

But Ms Marcos, the family matriarch, was convicted in November in a corruption case stemming from the time of her husband's brutal dictatorship.

He fled with his family to the US after his dictatorship fell in 1986, and died in exile three years afterwards.
