At least 242 Palestinian journalists have now been killed in the Gaza war

  • UN figures indicate that at least 242 Palestinian journalists have been killed in Gaza since 7 October 2023, making it one of the deadliest conflicts ever for the profession.
  • Six journalists, including prominent Al Jazeera correspondent Anas Al Sharif, were killed in a recent Israeli airstrike, sparking widespread international condemnation.
  • The Israeli Defence Force claimed that Al Sharif was a Hamas operative, a charge vehemently denied by Al Jazeera, which called the attack a "desperate attempt to silence voices."
  • Human rights organisations and news agencies, including the Committee to Protect Journalists and UN Human Rights, have condemned the killings, stressing that journalists are civilians and must be protected.
  • Concerns are mounting over the blocking of foreign journalists from Gaza and reports of journalists facing starvation, leading major news outlets to urge Israel to allow access and ensure food supplies.
