At least 24 people killed by catastrophic wildfires turning sky an ominous orange

Beneath an ominous orange sky, the Golden Gate Bridge is shrouded in thick smoke amid wildfires in the US that have killed at least 24 people.

Dozens more are missing as the west coast of America battles some of the worst wildfires in the nation’s history.

The smoke and ash was so dense by the bridge in San Francisco, California, most of the midday sun was blocked out.

Half a million residents in Oregon, a tenth of the state’s population, are under evacuation orders as hundreds of firefighters struggle to battle more than a dozen huge blazes that are on the verge of joining up.

The state’s biggest city, Portland, is one of the places under threat.

Distressed mum Beatriz Gomez Bolanos, 41, has told of her family’s frightening drive to safety through fires burning on both sides of their car.

She instructed her four children to close their eyes as they made their escape.

Beatriz said: “Everything is gone. We have to start again from nothing, but we are alive.”

A dad said that when he saw the smoke he raced back to his home to save his children.

The family are now left with just the clothes on their backs.

Reports yesterday said the air quality across swathes of the west coast including in Portland, Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles, is among the worst in the world, affecting tens of millions of people.

The fires have already destroyed more than 2.6 million acres in California alone.
