At least 4 dead, search on for missing after pedestrian bridge used by two-wheelers collapses

At least four people are dead after a pedestrian bridge over the Indrayani river collapsed this afternoon in Kundmala village of Pune district’s Maval taluka. Rescue operations are still underway and have so far managed to pull out at least 54 people who were swept away by the strong current.

Information from district authorities suggests that around 100 tourists had gathered at the spot for monsoon sightseeing when the structure gave way suddenly around 2 pm on Sunday.

The bridge, intended solely for pedestrian use, had reportedly also been used by two-wheelers.

Deepak Tiwari, second-in-command of the 5th Battalion of the NDRF in Pune, said the bridge was about 30 years old, approximately 250 metres in length, and just 3–4 feet wide. “It was not designed for vehicular use, but two-wheelers frequently used it. At the time of the collapse, there were five motorcycles and several pedestrians on the bridge,” he said.

Initial rescue efforts were carried out by locals before emergency services, including the Talegaon MIDC police, teams from the Maval Wildlife Rescue Organisation, and NDRF personnel, reached the scene.

Deepak Tiwari said 50 of those pulled out from the river had sustained injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals, including Pavana Hospital, MIMER Hospital, and Atharva Hospital in Somatane Phata. Eight were discharged, 42 are still receiving treatment, and four succumbed to injuries.

Officials believe that three people may still be trapped under the collapsed section of the bridge in the riverbed. Rescue efforts have been impacted by a rise in water levels and a strong current as the region experienced heavy rainfall over the past few days.

“Our teams are now working to remove debris from the river to check if anyone is still trapped underneath,” Tiwari said. “We’ve also deployed six boats downstream to expand the search. So far, we haven’t found anyone else, but the operation will continue for another four to five hours.”

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis tweeted about the tragedy. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said a probe will be conducted and action taken against those responsible for the incident.
