At least 13 people crushed to death after police raid Peru club

At least 13 people were crushed to death in a stampede at a nightclub in Peru raided by for allegedly breaching coronavirus rules, police said.

Around 120 people tried to escape the club in the Los Olivos district of Lima after police intervened.

Authorities have blamed the tragedy on "criminal irresponsibility" by an "unscrupulous businessman", the Mirror reports.

At least 13 people were killed in the crush, while a further six were injured, including three police officers.

Police in Lima have so far arrested 23 people in connection with the incident.

Peru has the second highest rate of coronavirus cases in South America behind Brazil and banned the opening of nightclubs across the country back in March.

Speaking to local radio station RPP, Orlando Velasco of the National Police said people had begun to fight to get out of Thomas Restobar nightclub.

"In these circumstances when people begin to fight to get out, it's tumultuous, everyone goes against each other," he said.

A statement from the Interior Ministry said the customers had tried to squeeze through the only entrance door, which led to a crush forming around a staircase leading out onto the street.
