At least 12 schools in borough hit by positive coronavirus cases

Another Wirral school has been hit by a coronavirus infection, as cases continue to rise in the borough.

Meadowside School, in Woodchurch, Wirral confirmed the case today.

It is understood that one class is self-isolating as a result.

Paula Wareing, headteacher of Meadowside School, said: “We have had one positive test for Covid-19 involving someone from the school recently and have acted in line with national guidelines and our own agreed processes.”

Many Wirral schools have been hit by the virus since their full return at the start of last month. Before Meadowside, at least 11 Wirral schools had been affected.

The full list of schools:

  • Woodchurch High School

Scores of schools have also been affected in other parts of Merseyside, as the infection rate continues to rocket.

Currently, Wirral’s infection rate is the lowest in Merseyside at 219 per 100,000, with 710 cases confirmed over the past seven days of reliable figures to October 1.

However, this represents a huge rise in recent weeks, with the borough’s infection rate under 100 until September 11.

In Liverpool a massive 2,423 cases of coronavirus have been recorded in the seven days to October 1, putting the city’s infection rate at 487 per 100,000.

Since October 3, meeting people from other households in any indoor setting has been banned in Merseyside and surrounding areas including Halton and Warrington.

It remains to be seen how much of an impact the new rules have on infection rates, but currently cases are continuing to rise causing huge disruption to schools and businesses.
