We write to make others aware of the benefits of a water meter. For years we have been paying a £1,000-a-year water bill to South West Water.
Following a chance discussion with a neighbour we discovered that our water bill was massive in comparison with others. We asked everyone along our terrace if they would mind sharing their bills. We found we were paying 75% more than the others.
We then began extensive communication with South West Water as to why our bill was so high. We were given all sorts of stats and figures and impenetrable information. To cut a long story short – we got nowhere! But we did discover, through our own research, that those with water meters were getting a better deal.
We applied for one and since it has been installed our quarterly bills are only around £40-£50, or £200 a year – a saving of £800. And we are using the same amount of water as we have always used!

An interesting letter aimed at anyone still paying their water bill according to their home rateable value.
Assuming you don’t have hour-long showers, most readers will reduce their water bill with a meter. And remember, you can have one installed and then revert back after six months if you decide it is not for you.
Keen gardeners who like watering in the summer may be the exception.
