'At any other club Steve Bruce's tenancy would be expiring' - national media reaction

Newcastle United’s torrid start to the season continued on Saturday as they were beaten 2-1 by Wolves at Molineux.

A pair of goals from Hee-Chan Hwang either side of Jeff Hendrick’s equaliser were enough to see off the Magpies in the West Midlands.

Speaking after his 999th game in management, Steve Bruce felt as though his side were unlucky to come away with nothing from the match.

“Today I didn’t think there was anything in it,” he said. “Unfortunately I’ve said that too many times this season.

“I feel like a long-playing record at the minute. Whoever you are in the Premier League, if you haven’t won in seven games we all know the drill.

“We all know what comes. It’s not easy. It still disappoints you and upsets you.”

Here is what the national media had to say about Newcastle following the defeat.

The Telegraph

Sam Dalling said : “At any other club, Bruce’s tenancy – now 96 games old – would be expiring. But this is Mike Ashley’s built-on-a-sixpence football business.

“With Callum Wilson absent, much, if not all, of the attacking burden falls on Allan Saint-Maximin’s trickery. He carries it well, but it is a near-impossible task.”

BBC Sport

Matthew Howarth wrote : “In a week which has seen Newcastle embroiled in legal proceedings with the Premier League regarding last summer's collapsed takeover of the club, Magpies fans could be forgiven for asking where their first win of the season is going to come from.

“Injured striker Callum Wilson cannot return quickly enough - Newcastle have claimed just two victories in their 17 Premier League games without the 29-year-old.”

The Times

Tim Nash said : “Much of the football was played in Wolves’ half as they struggled to clear their lines at times and continually looked nervous defensively.

“But with Wolves keeping as tight a rein on Saint-Maximin as they could, Newcastle had no way through.”

The Guardian

Peter Lansley wrote : “Newcastle had equalised through Jeff Hendrick, but ultimately failed to win for the seventh time this season.

“Their manager, Steve Bruce, was frustrated that once again his team had come out on the wrong side of fine margins.”
