Americans enthusiastically voting against their interests is practically the bedrock of the GOP’s success. The deep red counties in deep red states have the highest poverty, lowest standards of living, and most reliance on social security in the nation. On paper, you’d expect them to support a party with policies designed to improve their lives, but, well, “thats comunism go bak to rusia!!!”
As a case in point, look to the rural town of Curtis in southwest Nebraska. It has a population of around a thousand people who have relied on The Curtis Medical Center for their healthcare needs for the last 30 years. Now, it’s shutting its doors for good.
Community Hospital CEO Troy Bruntz didn’t mince words as to why: “Unfortunately, the current financial environment, driven by anticipated federal budget cuts to Medicaid, has made it impossible for us to continue operating all of our services, many of which have faced significant financial challenges for years.”
So, how did Curtis vote in 2024? What’s that, 87% for Donald Trump? If there’s a better example of turkeys voting for Thanksgiving, I haven’t seen it.
Yeah man that sucks. https://t.co/UqPMQ99urB pic.twitter.com/8UxCFPqod8

You’re on your own! Good luck!
Once upon a time, Democrats would grit their teeth and try to fight for these people. After all, while the adults in the community may have happily signed their own death warrants, their children don’t deserve to grow up without a local doctor, and everyone – no matter who they are – should have access to healthcare. But now? Patience has run out:
At a certain point you just have to let these people suffer. I legitimately just don't care anymore. https://t.co/HZv2GbsCsD

Responses agree, apparently concluding that these people need to learn a hard lesson in consequences: “Life has been too soft for too long, people forgot why folks fought and DIED for what we have today. So now we get to deal with the consequences of immense stupidity”, that pain is “the only language they understand”, and that ultimately, that people “need to feel real hurt and change to vote differently in the future.”
Even so, some are (just about) clinging to their principles, saying it’s not a good sign to become “heartless and evil” as that’s what got us into this mess in the first place. And, after all, Trump himself insisted he wasn’t going to cut Medicaid. It seems the poor fools in Curtis took Trump at his word (why?!), but whatever else happens for the next four years (at minimum), they’re going to suffer for it, and there’s not a thing any well-meaning Democrat can do about it.
