At 1.3%, Mumbai’s positivity rate at its lowest in second Covid wave

MUMBAI: The state and the city reported a slight dip in new Covid-19 cases on Saturday. Mumbai reported a positivity rate of 1.3%, the lowest so far in the second wave.

Maharashtra reported 8,296 cases; for the second day in a row the cases were under 9,000. Fatalities in the state also reported a dip with 179 new deaths and 315 old deaths added to the toll.

The total caseload of the state touched 61.49 lakh and the death toll rose to 1,25,528.

For the third consecutive day, fewer than 600 cases were registered in Mumbai. Of the 37,036 Covid-19 tests performed on Friday, only 503 tested positive. New death numbered 13, taking the toll to 15,612.

“We have not taken our focus off contact tracing. We continue to test 35,000 people on an average daily and should be able to notice any surge, if at all, quickly,” said additional municipal commissioner Suresh Kakani.

He said the Covid-19 wave was under control. “We have few daily admissions, barely five even in big centres such as NESCO in Goregaon,” said Kakani. At the moment, the 3,700-bedded facility has only 150 patients, said the officer.

There was a slight increase in active cases as discharges were lower than daily detections. There were 6,026 discharges, taking the total to over 59 lakh. The state had 1.14 lakh active cases, of which 11,558 were in Mumbai.
