Asymmetric skirts this season's must-have items

Asymmetric skirts are everywhere this season, with various kinds in the shops. Some are asymmetric front to back, others left to right. Shoppers can also choose from an abundant array of fabrics.

EPOCA, a brand owned by major apparel maker Sanyo Shokai Ltd. in Tokyo, offers skirts that fall below the knee. Its asymmetric pink skirt is shorter in the front than in the back, and is available for 42,120, yen including tax. Made from a blended fabric using hemp and sheen synthetic fibers, it gives an impression of lightness.

"Women in their 40s and older can easily incorporate skirts below the knee into their outfits. This type of skirt flares out toward the bottom, making their legs look slim," said Masafumi Mori of Sanyo's planning division.

Focusing on a vertical line gives a nice head-to-toe balance when wearing an asymmetric skirt, Mori said. The silhouette is an A-line shape, fitted and small in the upper part and flared toward the hemline.

This type of skirt usually creates volume in the lower half of the body, so it goes well with a simply designed top. Mori recommends slim short blouses and cut-and-sew tops.

"V-neck tops can highlight a beautiful neckline, creating a fresh look. As summer nears, I also recommend sleeveless tops," Mori said.

Make the legs look longer

Those who want to display a nice waistline should go for high-waisted skirts, which can make the legs look longer, according to Yoshifumi Nakajima, a sales manager at the Takashimaya department store in the Nihonbashi district of Tokyo.

At the INED shop at the Takashimaya store, a high-waisted asymmetric skirt is available for 20,520 yen. The yellow left-to-right asymmetric skirt is designed with pleats on one side. With a blouse tucked in, it goes well with a ribbon-like belt tied in the shape of a butterfly around the waist.

Because of their shape, many high-waisted skirts cover a larger proportion of the body than ordinary skirts. When they are not designed with ribbons or other decorations around the waist, pairing them with bulky or wide belts can add an accent as a clear separation between the top and bottom.

The kind of jacket that is worn can also influence the look of an asymmetric skirt.

"Assymetric skirts usually have distinctive designs, but if you match them with a slightly longer slim-cut jacket over a solid-color blouse, you can create a chic, sedate look," Nakajima said.

Dresses also popular

Irregular-hem dresses are also popular this season. Catalog mail-order company Belluna Co. in Saitama Prefecture sells a lace dress for 14,900, yen plus tax. It features a longer hemline at the back, giving it an elegant touch.
