Users are spoilt for choices when it comes to gaming laptops. Asus has just updated its mid-range TUF series, known for its solid build quality and attractive pricing, bringing in a 17-inch screen option for buyers. Dubbed as the TUF FX705DT ( ₹82,990), the notebook has a lot going for it. In addition to the big screen, its other highlights include Nvidia's new GTX 16 series graphics.
Design
The FX705DT belongs to the third generation of TUF series notebooks. However, it retains the design language of the original and has a similar hexagonal pattern on top we saw on its predecessors. One of the variants has got sand blasted metal finish and the other has a plastic finish. We reviewed the plastic variant and it feels incredibly solid. At 2.7kg, it feels a bit hefty, but has a smaller footprint due to the thin bezel design.
Compared to most gaming notebooks, the TUF doesn't cry out loud about its gaming roots and has a toned down look with hardly any fancy design elements or LED light zones on the chassis. One can use it comfortably at workplace and play games in free time between work without calling for attention.
Keyboard & Connectivity
Asus hasn't tried anything new with the keyboard. The widely used chicklet style keys flank the middle of the base with the num pad on the usual right hand corner. The keys are small, but there is ample space between them and they respond well to gentle key strokes. They are also backlit so one can work on them in dark as well.
The right and left click on the touchpad have been marked with arrows so users know where to click. While the palm rest is wide and spacious, the trackpad feels a bit small. All connectivity options which include the USB, LAN, HDMI and 3.5mm are lined up on left side panel while the two modestly powerful speakers are placed on the left and right side panels.
Display
The 17.3-inch screen in any gaming notebook is a treat. The FX705DT’s screen scores in that regard. At full resolution of 1,920x1,080p, games and Full HD movies look sharp. Colours look accurate enough to not make you feel disappointed, but don’t expect the vividness of an Alienware Area 51 from this. The anti-glare coating is a nice touch and keeps reflections at bay. However, at 60Hz refresh rate, the display is a step down from the 144Hz display we saw in last year’s TUF notebooks.
Performance
Powered by AMD’s top of the line Ryzen 7- 3750H with 8GB RAM, Radeon Vega Mobile graphics and Nvdia’s new GTX 1650 (4GB) graphics, the notebook runs Windows 10 on top. It is pretty powerful combo for the given price point as most notebooks in this range use the outdated Nvidia GTX 1050 graphics. Gaming performance is impressive and at Full HD resolution and high graphic settings games like Just Cause 4 and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey played out without any hiccups.
Verdict
The new TUF FX705DT is a value for money gaming notebook that lives up to most of its promises. The big screen is an added bonus. If you are looking for a powerful mid-range notebook that can run new AA titles without breaking a sweat, this is the best option out there in this price.
