Astronomer solves mystery of 'alien-like' object caught speeding through the sky in Leeds on CCTV

An amateur astronomer has unravelled the mystery behind the light spotted over Leeds.

A strange object was spotted speeding through the sky on Thursday morning (November 12) but no one seemed to know what it was.

Some had suggested it could have been a silent firework or even an alien.

Karen Spencer, from Driglington, who caught the strange flash at 5.42am on CCTV was left baffled when she saw the footage.

Speaking to LeedsLive, she said: "I thought it was a shooting star but the camera picks it up 12 seconds before. You expect a shooting star to be more spontaneous.”

Karen added: “Some people had said its fireworks but the area it came from its all old people. I can’t see old people being up at 5.40am letting off fireworks. I’m not quite sure what it is, to be honest.”

But an astronomer has come forward and solved the mystery which had left hundreds of people confused by confirming his assumption that it was a meteor.

Tony Higgins said: “As an amateur astronomer and active meteor photographer and observer I have photographed and videoed them myself over the years, I can definitely say this is what it was.”
