Astronauts touch back down on Earth after 197-day mission on International Space Station

Three astronauts have landed back on earth on after living on the International Space Station for more than six months.

They returned in the Russian Soyuz capsule which landed on the snow-covered steppes in Kazakhstan on Thursday, after 197 days in space.

The crew spoke over radio and said they were feeling fine.

Russian rescue teams rushed to the landing site, in helicopters and all-terrain vehicles, to take the astronauts from the capsule.

Its body had been charred by a fiery ride through atmosphere.

The rescue crews helped the crew, clad in their iconic space suits, leave the capsule and conducted initial medical examinations on them.

The trio was made up of NASA's Serena Aunon-Chancellor, Russian Sergey Prokopyev and German astronaut Alexander Gerst of the European Space Agency.

It was the first mission for Ms Aunon-Chancellor and Mr Prokopyev.

Meanwhile, it was Mr Gerst's second and took him to a total of 362 days in orbit which set the ESA's flight duration record.

The astronauts will be taken to Dzhezkazgan, a city around 87 miles from their landing spot, for a brief welcome ceremony then to their respective countries for more thorough check-ups.

NASA astronaut Anne McClain, Russian Oleg Kononenko and David Saint-Jacques of the Canadian Space Agency, who arrived at the station earlier this month, are set to remain in orbit until June.
