First came the cover version, recorded in outer space. Now retired Canadian astronaut Colonel Chris Hadfield has plans for a full album.

Two years on from going viral with his version of David Bowie’s Space Oddity, Hadfield’s album will feature guitar parts and vocal tracks recorded during his time in space. According to a statement, the album will be “a human first”.

Hadfield said: “The serenity and grace I felt while orbiting our Earth, weightless by the window, gave a whole new place to write and perform music. I’m delighted to be able to share these completed works as a new way to help tell the stories of early space exploration.”

Hadfield, 55, commanded the International Space Station during a five-month period that ended in May 2013. He retired in July of that year.

While parts of the album were recorded in space, producer Robbie Lackritz was drafted in to work on them back here on earth.

The press release mentions “special guests” and refers to other Canadian artists, including Buck 65, Barenaked Ladies and Ron Sexsmith. However, it’s currently unclear as to whether they feature on the record, or if Hadfield just recorded versions of their songs. The album is set to be released later this year.
