AstraZeneca vaccine trial in children halted over blood clotting concerns

A Covid-19 vaccine trial for children and teenagers has been paused by the University of Oxford due to concerns over blood clotting.

In a statement a spokesperson from the university is quoted by The Mirror as saying: “Whilst there are no safety concerns in the paediatric clinical trial, we await additional information from the MHRA on its review of rare cases of thrombosis/thrombocytopaenia that have been reported in adults, before giving any further vaccinations in the trial.

“Parents and children should continue to attend all scheduled visits and can contact the trial sites if they have any questions.”

Earlier today it was reported how the MHRA was said to be considering advising people aged under 30 against taking the Oxford AstraZeneca jab.

The agency said it identified 30 cases of rare blood clot events out of 18.1 million doses of the jab administered up to and including March 24. There have been seven deaths among the 30 cases. It said, however, that the benefits of the vaccine in preventing coronavirus outweighed any risks and it urged the public to continue coming forward for the jab.

It is not known whether the cases have occurred as a result of the jab, or if they would have happened naturally in the population anyway.

A number of countries have imposed restrictions on the use of the jab in younger adults.
